What We’re Looking For:

FoodCorps is seeking an experienced Research & Evaluation Director to join our internal evaluation team! Reporting to the Senior Director of System & Evaluation, and part of the Impact Operations department, this person will work collaboratively across the organization. This person will set the direction for evaluation under FoodCorps’ new strategic plan and work with staff throughout the organization to shape and implement these plans, spanning our school-based AmeriCorps service program focused on food education and school food, to our training and alumni professional development efforts, to our policy and advocacy efforts. This person will be a thought partner around new strategy and program development efforts; update and develop evaluation tools and approaches; and collaborate with external-facing teams to ensure that AmeriCorps and grant expectations are met. This person will also act as a supervisor, coach, and thought partner to two evaluation team members.

Occasional travel to attend events or visit our program across the country may be required.

Who You Are:

You are an experienced evaluator who is passionate about FoodCorps’ mission and the way that feedback, data, and learning can help us improve and document the ways in which we make systemic changes that better serve children and schools across the country. Your evaluation practice centers equity and culturally responsive practices, and you can apply it to a program that—by design—is flexible and adaptable to community partner goals and needs. You are an adept organizational leader, who understands that internal evaluation is facilitative and relational, and you can bring together people with diverse interests and needs, and focus the group’s efforts on answering the questions that are most important, relevant, and possible. You have a background in evaluation of public health, education, and/or food systems initiatives, including through the lens of systemic change efforts. You have a track record of developing and testing evaluation tools that balance evidence and real-world considerations. You are an all around great teammate, who is happy to engage in both the details of data analysis and the strategic implications of evaluation findings.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead the day-to-day work of the internal evaluation team, supervising and coaching two evaluation team staff and working with staff across the organization.
  • Direct internal evaluation efforts, and set the direction for and supervise periodic external evaluations.
  • In collaboration with impact-focused staff, hone key outcomes and indicators related to FoodCorps’ new strategic plan. Work with these staff and the evaluation team to craft a strategic evaluation and learning plan and implement relevant tools, data collection methods, and evaluation processes.
  • Collaboratively set evaluation strategy across areas related to FoodCorps’ programs and initiatives: nutrition education, school gardens, school wellness, school meals, social-emotional development, school climate and culture, leadership development, policy advocacy, and systemic change.
  • Review and revise existing internal evaluation tools and data systems to align with FoodCorps’ strategic plan direction, including surveys to advise program delivery, AmeriCorps service program outputs, student and school environment assessment tools (e.g., FoodCorps’ Healthy School Progress Report), and alumni data collection.
  • Lead all aspects of data systems and practices related to evaluation, ensuring data integrity and access (e.g., program monitoring dashboards, student survey practices). Partner with other teams to ensure data is collected with an evaluation lens.
  • Ensure AmeriCorps performance measurement and evaluation expectations are met, updating existing or implementing new performance measures and crafting internal and external evaluations to meet requirements.
  • Collaborate with fundraising and programmatic staff to set and ensure appropriate grant metrics and evaluation results.
  • Together with the evaluation team and relevant staff, train service members and staff around reporting and data use, and ensure compliance.
  • Write or contribute to clear and compelling evaluation reports, materials, and presentations that communicate learning, outcomes, and their applications internally and externally.
  • Engage with programmatic and external partners, funders, and evaluators interested in about FoodCorps’ evaluation work, and learning from theirs.
  • Manage team budget and work planning processes.

Skills and Experience of the Ideal Candidate:

  • At least three to five years’ work experience in an evaluation leadership role, including experience managing internal and applied evaluation teams.
  • Demonstrated experience setting an evaluation agenda, metrics, and learning approach for national or multi-site, place based programs and initiatives.
  • Experience designing and implementing high quality, practical, and responsive evaluations, with a demonstrated reputation for applying equitable evaluation and culturally responsive evaluation practices and methods throughout the course of a project.
  • Track record of using a facilitative leadership approach to set impactful evaluation agendas and support learning and improvement.
  • Extensive knowledge of evidence base, common metrics, evaluation tools and frameworks, and priority outcomes for public health, education, and food systems initiatives. Additional desired areas of experience include systems change evaluation, leadership development, and policy advocacy.
  • Strong data collection, data management, qualitative and quantitative analytical skills.
  • Experience sourcing, developing, or validating tools for original data collection.
  • Effective team and project management skills, including in-person and remote team communication and facilitation.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including across distance.
  • Experience designing and writing concise, visually appealing, user-friendly evaluation reports and materials for multiple audiences.
  • Ability to independently and collectively meet goals, solve problems, and prioritize multiple projects.
  • High standard of ethics, ensuring discreet handling of original data and participant feedback.
  • Proficiency with a variety of evaluation tools, such as survey software (e.g., SurveyMonkey, Qualtrics), qualitative analysis software (e.g., NVivo, Dedoose), Google Suite, R programming language (preferred), Salesforce (preferred).

FoodCorps pays salaries that are competitive with nonprofits of our budget size and geographic location, and offers generous vacation and medical benefits, 401(k) matching, professional development funds and a sabbatical policy. This position is a Director level role with a salary range of $105K-$123K/yr.
