Director of Philanthropic Engagement
What We’re Looking For:
FoodCorps seeks a skilled project manager, strong communicator, and seasoned fundraising professional to work across the fundraising team, providing key leadership in the areas of donor acquisition, donor stewardship and engagement, and operations. Reporting directly to the VP of External Affairs, the Director of Philanthropic Engagement will manage campaigns and special projects that strengthen and sustain FoodCorps’ revenue base and deepen relationships with funding partners, while designing and supporting systems that solidify best practices in fund development and donor stewardship. Within the context of FoodCorps’ planned capital campaign, the Director will serve as a thought partner and idea generator; partnering with the VP of External Affairs to develop acquisition strategies, open up new funding audiences, and manage an emerging annual fund program. The Director will also hold responsibility for developing a meaningful, authentic and enriching partnership experience for current donors and prospects. This position will manage a two-person team, including FoodCorps’ Development Research and Operations Manager and its Development Coordinator.
This is a full-time position, located within FoodCorps’ New York City office.

- Assists VP of External Affairs in revenue planning for FoodCorps’ 2020 strategic plan, including development of an ambitious donor acquisition plan and supporting execution of FoodCorps’ comprehensive capital campaign plan. In close partnership with the VP of External Affairs, helps identify funding priorities and sets campaign goals for special projects and funding initiatives.
- In the context of FoodCorps’ capital campaign, partners with the VP of External Affairs and Campaign Working Group to execute a strong donor stewardship program including donor recognition, design of campaign events, and management of gift agreements.
- With an eye to retaining and growing annual support, works closely with the Communications and Marketing team to design acquisition and annual campaigns that open new donor audiences and make it easy and fulfilling to give.
- Designs and leads a multi-year donor engagement plan with an eye toward creating a meaningful donor experience. Drives FoodCorps’ event strategy, including cultivation and stewardship events, annual partner summits, and corporate activation and volunteer engagement activities. Evaluates the quality and impact of FoodCorps’ donor and prospect engagement activities.
- With the VP of External Affairs, works to build an enthusiastic culture of philanthropy. Activates, supports, and partners with members of the Executive Team and key program staff in becoming effective fundraisers. Identifies smart and highly visible opportunities for staff leadership to engage new audiences and raise FoodCorps’ profile by securing staff speaking engagements and participating in key, donor-facing conferences and events.
- Partners with portfolio managers in donor cultivation, stewardship and solicitation activities and participates in face-to-face donor meetings.
- Leads our fundraising operations unit and builds systems that support top-level fundraising by portfolio managers. Directly manages two staff members: FoodCorps’ External Affairs Coordinator and Manager of Donor Research/Operations.
Skills of the Ideal Candidate:
- Minimum of 5 years experience establishing partnerships with diverse funders, generating new funding streams and managing successful fundraising programs. Experience fundraising within capital campaigns preferred.
- Demonstrated understanding of development philosophies, concepts and techniques, including prospect research, cultivation and closing gifts.
- Demonstrated success planning and managing donor events.
- Excellent communication skills, with a strong customer service orientation. Experience managing online fundraising campaigns, peer to peer giving, and use of social media for fundraising purposes desired.
- Strong strategic thinking, visioning and analytical skills, including ability to develop a creative approach to resource development strategies and ability to translate concepts into fundable presentations.
- Strength in multi-tasking, goal-setting, prioritization and project management.
- Shows resourcefulness and flexibility. Is highly motivated and has the ability to work as a team player and also to work independently with minimum supervision.
- Strong leader with success managing teams, inspiring confidence and respect, and fostering collaboration. Ability to coach others, including providing and receiving feedback on donor strategies.
- High degree of comfort in a computer-based environment and proficiency in current CRM software (e.g. Salesforce or Raiser’s Edge).
- Possess an intellectual curiosity, understanding and enthusiasm for the work of FoodCorps.
